Obituary of Evelyn Schmidt

Evelyn Schmidt, 83, of Schuyler, Nebraska, died Monday, August 15, 2016, at the Fremont Medical Center, Fremont, Nebraska. Evelyn A. Schmidt was born July 6, 1933, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Otto and Celia (Schwank) Blessen. She attended Platte County Schools and helped on the family farm prior to her marriage to Gerald Stracke in 1951. When Celia became ill, Evelyn moved into the family home to take care of her mother, and helped raise her siblings. Evelyn later married Mark Schmidt, Sr. Throughout the years Evelyn lived in several places including Fremont and Schuyler, Nebraska; Stratton, Colorado; and finally back to Columbus. Evelyn was an active woman, holding down several jobs over the years. She worked at D & L, was a distributor for the Omaha World Herald, Woerner Oil, and while in Colorado Evelyn worked for the assessor’s office. Evelyn had a special love for the aging and handicapped and worked for Dynamic Dimensions while living in Stratton. When Evelyn moved back to Schuyler in 2003, she began volunteer work as an ombudsman for Northeast Nebraska Area Agency on Aging. She was an avid NASCAR fan, enjoyed playing bingo and bowling. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
